Description
For sale isan interesting lidded box made by Meissen in the mid to late 19th century . It is decorated with their famous Zwiebelmuster (blue onion) design in under glaze blue and has a nice shape to it. The lid has an easy to use handle as a finial and the inside has two indented pieces as dividers as shown. I am really unsure as to the use of this box and have never seen another. I assume it is part of a desk set and you would put your fancy fountain pens inside or even some nice cigars? It can off course be used as anything you see fit but I would love to know its original purpose. The piece is decorated with the usual blue onion design around the edge of the lid and all around the outside of the main body - no swords in the stalks yet so a nice earlier pieces. Around the edge of the top part of the lid is a nice blue design to it and the handle has some blue trim as well. The dish is marked underneath with the under glaze blue crossed swords (with two cuts across the swords though I cannot figure out why) as well as the usual other blue painter's mark and impressed number as shown. The box is about 3 inches tall including the handle, 8 inches wide and 3.5 inches deep. The dish and lid are in perfect condition.
