In order to finance the winter event, the Quebec Winter Carnival issued Carnival dollars. Very popular with coin collectors as well as collectors of carnival items, these issues will continue each year.
The vast majority of these 32 cm diameter coins bear the Bonhomme Carnaval effigy on the reverse and look like the previous 1 dollar nickel coins.
The series of tokens from Quebec City, issued for their famous Carnaval de Quebec, is undoubtedly the most complex token series ever seen in Canada. Every year, starting in 1978, multiple different types of tokens were issued. Each type featured a nostalgic scene from a Carnaval of years past - in the first years of issue, this scene was always the famous mascot Bonhomme (who changes slightly every year), but in later years many different aspects of past Carnavals were featured. Because many different types were issued over so many different years, over 56 different types of tokens from Quebec City are known to exist!
First of a denomination of 1 dollar, we will see the appearance of 2 dollar
coins in 1986. The coins were valid at the merchants of the city during the time of the Carnival, that is generally two weeks. The expiration date was indicated on the coin. In recent years, for the Quebec Winter Carnival, the Royal Canadian Mint has launched complete sets usually containing a 25 or 50 cent coin bearing the figure of the Bonhomme Carnaval on its reverse.
